What are cookies?
Cookies are often known as browser cookies or tracking cookies. These cookies are small encrypted text files stored in browser directories. Like other web servers, we also place these cookies on your device to collect standard internet log information and visitor behaviour information. We use cookies in both our website and our Playerence platform, read below how each of them work and what they do specifically.
How do we use cookies on our website?
Our website uses cookies to ensure it works correctly, to understand how visitors use the site, and to support newsletter sign-ups and our partner programme. Some cookies are strictly necessary, while others are optional and help us improve our website and business.
We do not use cookies for advertising networks or cross-site profiling.
Essential cookies (always active)
Essential cookies are required for the website to function properly and cannot be disabled.
These cookies are used to:
- ensure website security and stability
- enable basic site functionality and navigation
- support design consistency and user interface behaviour (for example via a unique identifier used for layout or design purposes)
Without these cookies, parts of the website may not function correctly.
Legal basis: Strictly necessary for the provision of the website.
Analytics cookies (optional)
Analytics cookies help us understand how visitors interact with our website so we can improve content, usability, and performance.
We use Plausible Analytics, a privacy-friendly analytics tool, to collect aggregated website usage statistics such as:
- page views
- referral sources
- general navigation patterns
Plausible Analytics does not use advertising cookies and does not track users across websites.
You can browse the website without enabling analytics cookies.
Legal basis: Consent.
Functional cookies (optional)
Functional cookies support specific features on the website that are not strictly necessary but improve the overall experience.
These cookies are used to:
- manage newsletter sign-ups and email communication preferences (via Encharge)
- attribute sign-ups or purchases to referral or affiliate partners (via Partnero)
These cookies are first-party or limited-purpose cookies and are not used for behavioural advertising or cross-site tracking.
Legal basis: Consent, where applicable.
Marketing cookies
We do not currently use marketing or advertising cookies on this website.
If we introduce marketing cookies in the future (for example for retargeting or campaign measurement), we will update this policy and ask for your consent before such cookies are enabled.
How do we use cookies on our Playerence platform?
Our Playerence platform uses cookies to ensure quizzes work correctly, to provide fair and reliable gameplay, and to generate insights for our clients. Some cookies are strictly necessary for the platform to function, while others are optional and help improve the experience.
We do not use cookies for advertising or profiling users across websites. All processing takes place within our EU-based infrastructure.
Essential cookies (always active)
Essential cookies are required for the Playerence platform to function properly and cannot be disabled.
These cookies are used to:
- keep a quiz session active
- remember answers and progress
- calculate scores and results
- ensure fair play and prevent duplicate or fraudulent participation
- maintain platform security and stability
Without these cookies, quizzes cannot be played.
Legal basis: Strictly necessary for the provision of the service.
Analytics cookies (optional)
Analytics cookies help us understand how players interact with quizzes so we can improve the platform and the quiz experience.
These cookies are used to analyse:
- quiz and question completion rates
- drop-off points
- response patterns
- overall platform performance and reliability
Analytics on the Playerence platform are processed internally within Playerence’s EU-based infrastructure and are not shared with third-party analytics or advertising providers.
You can choose to disable analytics cookies and still play quizzes without restriction.
Legal basis: Consent.
Marketing cookies (optional)
Playerence itself does not use marketing or advertising cookies on the platform.
In some cases, our clients (who act as Data Controllers) may choose to link quiz participation or results to their own marketing systems for follow-up communications, based on the permissions they collect directly from users (for example via a consent checkbox in a quiz form).
If marketing cookies are used in a specific quiz context, this will be clearly communicated, and you will be able to choose whether to enable or disable them.
Legal basis: Consent, where applicable.
Cookie and data retention periods on our platform
| Cookie | Duration | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
isCookiesAccepted | 5 years (if accepted) / 30 days (if declined) | Remembers your consent choice so you are not asked again |
uuid | 5 years | Identifies you as a player across sessions for fair play and correct scoring |
laravel_session | Session — cleared when browser closes | Maintains your active quiz session |
XSRF-TOKEN | Session — cleared when browser closes | Security token to protect against request forgery |
lang | Stored locally in browser, no server expiry | Remembers your language preference |
Quiz response data (your name, email, and answers) is retained for a period set by the organisation that ran the quiz. The default is 5 years from the quiz end date, but individual organisations may configure a shorter period. After this period, your name and email are replaced with anonymous identifiers. To find out the specific retention period for a quiz you participated in, contact the organisation that sent you the quiz link.
Your rights
If you have participated in a Playerence quiz, you have the following rights under GDPR:
- Right to access — request a copy of the personal data held about you
- Right to erasure — request that your personal data be deleted
- Right to rectification — request that inaccurate data be corrected
- Right to object — object to processing of your personal data
- Right to withdraw consent — withdraw cookie consent at any time (see below)
To exercise these rights, contact the organisation that ran the quiz — they are the Data Controller for your personal data. If you are unsure who that is, contact us at [email protected] and we will direct your request to the right party.
Playerence acts solely as a Data Processor and handles personal data only on the documented instructions of the Data Controller.
How to withdraw cookie consent
You can withdraw your cookie consent at any time by clearing the cookies in your browser settings. The next time you open a Playerence quiz, the consent banner will reappear and you can make a new choice.
Please note: clearing cookies will also remove your player session identifier (uuid). This means your previous quiz scores and history will no longer be associated with you on that device.
Instructions for clearing cookies: Chrome · Firefox · Safari · Edge
